This is the first quilt I made by the fabulous pattern designer Emily Dennis of Quilty Love, called Expanding Star It is a really good beginner quilt for those getting to grips with Half Square Triangles (HSTs)
I made the baby sized quilt and it came together fast! It was a good lesson in learning to trim and accurately piece HSTs, although it is a fairly forgiving pattern if you are new to this.
I went for simple quilting by stitching a 1/4″ either side of the ditch. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out!
I used the same fabric to back the quilt that I used in the star. It is my favourite colour and I love mixing it with reds and pinks. It reminds me of the quilts made by Thimble Blossom which I fell in love with when I first discovered quilting.
I was feeling brave and decided to machine bind this quilt. Machine binding takes a bit of getting used to but. I used this tutorial which was really helpful. I don’t think I did a bad job for my first effort.
I also made a label using printable transfer paper. I typed the label in Word, reversed it, printed the label on to the transfer paper, then ironed it on to the fabric. Next I used heat n bond to iron the label on to the quilt. No stitching required!
Much as I loved this first Expanding Star Quilt I decided to donate it to an auction in aid of the Cancer Unit at my local Hospital. A worthy cause and one that I was happy to donate this favourite quilt to.
